Make protection part of the scope
A trench is not ready for entry simply because excavation is complete. OSHA’s excavation standard requires cave-in protection except for specified circumstances, including excavation entirely in stable rock or an excavation less than five feet deep where a competent person finds no indication of a potential cave-in. Depth alone is not a general declaration of safety. The protective system must be appropriate for the conditions and meet the applicable design requirements.
Identify responsibilities before work
Project planning should identify the competent person, the protective-system approach, and the space and resources needed to implement it. Owners should provide available utility and site information and clarify coordination responsibilities. Budget and schedule discussions need to account for the actual construction method, rather than treating protective measures as an optional extra when workers arrive.
Conditions require inspection
OSHA requires competent-person inspections before work, as needed during the shift, and after rain or other hazard-increasing events when employee exposure can reasonably be anticipated. If hazardous conditions are found, exposed employees must be removed until the necessary precautions are taken. Know the limits of a checklist
Property owners and visitors should stay outside controlled excavation areas and follow the site team’s directions. A blog article cannot select a trench box, slope angle or support system for a particular job. These notes are general awareness for planning discussions; they do not replace training, a competent person’s assessment, engineered design where required, or the employer’s site-specific safety procedures.
