Separate earthwork from material assumptions
Existing and proposed contours help define cut, fill and haul quantities. Topsoil stripping, unsuitable material, imported structural fill and rock should be identified separately. If there is no survey or soil report, describe what is known and ask for a site review before treating a preliminary allowance as a fixed quantity.
Coordinate compaction and verification
Fill type, lift thickness and acceptance testing should follow the project specifications and the geotechnical recommendations. Share the required testing responsibilities before pricing. A visibly firm surface alone does not establish compliance with a specified density or bearing requirement.
Finish grades need an outlet
The finished surface must work with doors, pavement, drainage structures and surrounding property. Send spot elevations and outlet information when available. For property corrections, photos during and after rain help show where water collects and which areas need a closer review.
Project questions
Can you use a digital grading model?
Send the available CAD or grading model and the required survey control. Model preparation, layout and machine-control support should be confirmed as specific proposal items.
Is imported fill included automatically?
No. Material type, quantity, delivery and placement are listed in the estimate. Unknown soil conditions or changed grades can affect both excavation and fill quantities.
